Overstock “Funny Name Campaign”
Overstock.com came to Ember Creative Agency with a brand challenge worth tackling head-on: customers assumed Overstock only sold overstock goods, when in reality the site carried a full range of new, brand-name products across every category. The fix wasn't more product messaging — it was a sharper insight. The brand needed to flip a perception, and the campaign had to do it in a way audiences would remember. The answer? A campaign built on the simple truth that names can be deceiving — including, sometimes, the name of a store. Across the campaign, we built a series of comedic spots rooted in the same universal insight: people, products, and names often aren't what you first assume. "Oscar Lavista" launched the campaign with a guy stepping up to an airport counter, only to have the agent riff "Oscar Lavista, baby" the second she sees his name — proving in a single beat that what something is called and what it actually is can be two very different things. "TableRunner" kept the energy going with a husband who finally answers his wife's request for a table runner — by hiring a professional runner to sprint laps across their dining room table. Both spots, different setups, same brand truth: don't judge something by its name. Working end to end with Overstock's in-house team, our team handled every spot from creative concept through final delivery. The tone is comedic and bold across the campaign, with each piece built around a punchline-driven structure that gave audiences a reason to watch — and a reason to rethink what Overstock actually was. Every casting, performance, and timing choice was tuned to make the gag land instantly and the brand insight stick. The result? A campaign that was a huge success for Overstock — reshaping perception of what the brand actually sold and giving the team a comedic creative engine they could keep building on. Each spot reinforced the same idea from a different angle, turning a category-defining brand misconception into one of the most memorable Overstock campaigns of its era.
